Is Helicon Zoo free to use?

25 Apr 2013, 19:33

Hello,

Few Questions:

1.) I am working on integrating a Python web framework with IIS and we want to make use of Helicon Zoo as part of installation guidelines for running it on IIS. I wanted to confirm if that's alrite? And I am assuming this is not open source?

2.) Is there anyway I can incorporate Helicon Zoo installation as part of my web framework installation. May be what I mean is... is it possible to list Helicon Zoo as a dependency for my framework installation within Web Platform installer? So that people will have to install Zoo in order for my framework to run on IIS.

3.) We are also building an IIS UI module to work with the framework properties and I would like to include the ability to change the properties of the configuration that Helicon Zoo writes to local web.config, specifically, the WSGI_APP property. I can do that but is there some restriction?

3.) Also is it possible just to install the python part of Helicon zoo and not the others?

Please do let me know. Thank!

Regards,
M A Khan

Hello, Khan

"And I am assuming this is not open source?"
- it's not open source for now (we are considering this option), but it's free

"Is there anyway I can incorporate Helicon Zoo installation as part of my web framework installation."
- Yes, it's possible. Add Zoo feed in WebPI and add dependency to Python Hosting Package to your product installation

"I would like to include the ability to change the properties of the configuration that Helicon Zoo writes to local web.config, specifically, the WSGI_APP property. I can do that but is there some restriction?"
- There are no restrictions, you can change any properties in web.config.

"Also is it possible just to install the python part of Helicon zoo and not the others?"
- sure, you can choose to install Python Hosting Package in WebPI and nothing else.

P.S. We are happy that you are using our product so extensively. Could you give us a link to your site (maybe to [email protected]), so we could use you as an example.

A small addition:

We are going to release Helicon Zoo version 3 soon (it is beta now). You may want to target your solution for this version as V.2 will soon be deprecated after release. The main difference of V.3 is that it offers built-in HTML web console application - a console in the browser that you can use to run commands in your application environment. New applications will have better isolation and easy portable between machines. V.3 will be backward compatible with V.2

1.) Yes, it is OK to use Helicon Zoo services in other projects.
2.) Additionally you may find useful my answer in this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15896943/django-on-iis-pyisapie-or-fastcgi-or-wsgi-or-helicon-zoo-or-djangowindowstools It shows how to install Django with Helicon Zoo and all requirements with command line.

Hello!

You can try Helicon Zoo beta version now. Please remove existing Helicon Zoo feed from WebPI and add the following beta feed instead: http://www.helicontech.com/zoo/feed-beta

To try new Python projects please select Zoo -> Templates -> Python project.
This will install python project template on a target server. Then follow instructions on the project welcome (index) page.

I'll appreciate your feedback and comments.
